Wycherley's meta-analysis found high-protein diets preserved +0.43 kg more lean mass while boosting resting energy expenditure by ~596 kJ/day. Westerterp-Plantenga's maintenance research found 50–64% less weight regain — and what was regained came back as lean mass, not fat. That is the difference between losing weight and losing body composition.
